Salena McKelvey
The Young Caregiver
Salena McKelvey is the youngest of three children to Benjamin McKelvey Jr and Juanitha McKelvey. When she was younger, she had dreams of becoming a nurse or social worker. Her Mom encouraged her to research the career of an accountant because she excelled in her accounting class. Salena became an accountant but always had a heart and passion for helping people. In a matter of days, her Dad suffered a second stroke and her Mom was diagnosed with moderate to severe dementia. Both were in the same hospital and Salena was living at the hospital to make sure she was accessible for their care teams.
It was an easy decision to take care of her parents in their home. She could never tear them apart because of the love she witnessed between her parents. Little did she know that would be their last year together. Through her caregiving journey, she experienced a lot of things she knew others could benefit from so she started her blog “The Young Caregiver” to be a resource and inspiration to caregivers. Salena authored a Caregiver’s Journal titled, “Plan of Action: How to Save Your Own Life” because she knows that caregiving affects you physically, mentally, and emotionally.
